Sarushima is the largest uninhabited island with aboriginal forest in Tokyo Bay. The island also shared its history with human beings since the old time. Many artifacts from Jomon and Yayoi periods were excavated from many sites, and, in the Edo period, the island was used as a battery, and then it became Western-style battery in the Meiji period. Since after the WWII, it has been enjoying peaceful days and designated as historical heritage and civil engineering heritage.
