Mabori Kaigan

Overview

It was once a beautiful sandy beach crowded with people enjoying swimming and bathing. Later a development changed the beach by making bypass and residential area along a long seawall constructed. Currently the scenery of the quiet residential area has been regarded as one of representative sceneries of Yokosuka city. By the way, it has been said that "Mabori," literally stands for horse (ma) and dig (bori), was named after the following myth: An unruly horse that swam across the sea reached the beach and kicked a rock, and then fresh water sprang out. The horse drank the water and suddenly became a steed, and then Shogun's.
